Typically, summer was seen as the “silly season” for news; sightings of the Loch Ness monster and the affairs of celebs no one had ever heard of. Here we have the ill-considered proposals and activities of BCP Council.
- High on the list this month is a proposal to solve car parking problems near the beach by, amongst other things, charging residents and their guests to park in their own roads.** The almost unanimous flood of objections has caused Cllr Millie Earl, BCP Council’s leader to say the majority “Three Towns Alliance” will not support the proposals and they will not go ahead in their present form. However, BPCCRA remains cautious. Past experience shows that withdrawn proposals can reappear later, often as a “foregone conclusion” without proper consultation. We remain vigilant!
A sensible answer to the illegal parking problems is for the Council to be able to levy much higher fines. Currently its only £35 which is little more than a day’s parking charge. To get this changed needs government action so please lobby our local MP, Neil Duncan-Jordan neilduncanjordan.mp@parliament.uk to put pressure on the relevant ministry.
- Next on our list of concerns is the ongoing saga of the creation or otherwise of a Poole Town Council. There is a wide spectrum of views within our membership with a consensus that it would be an expensive and unnecessary extra level of bureaucracy. However, there is a real concern that Poole’s historic identity is systematically being eliminated. Further members’ views very welcome. For a small example, see the next item.
- Has anyone else noticed that the rather fine cast sign announcing “Canford village” has been replaced with a flat boring Black and White sign. The removed sign was provided by the Canford Cliffs Land Society, supported by BPCCRA, and not by the Council. It is interesting that the Council can find the money to do this but can’t fund the replacement of a damaged waste bin.
Finally, our keen and active editor of Pines & Chines Annabel ed.pinesandchines@icloud.com is planning content for our Winter edition. She would especially like to hear how people celebrated VE Day 80 earlier this year, plus of course anything else members would like to contribute or see in the magazine.
