Council expenditure on Consultants – 2016/17 (A note from John Sprackling)

posted in: News 0

It was reported to the Cabinet on 13 June 2017, that the Council has paid 35 firms (29 firms in 2015/16) on individuals in excess of the £10,000 business case threshold. The report simply named the consultants involved with no further data, apart the table at the foot of this note.

The Portfolio Holder responsible for the report made no comment about it nor did any of the other Cabinet members have any questions either.

This issue has been a subject of concern to residents over many years with significant sums being spent on Consultant’s reports which have simply ‘gathered dust’. The Council set up A ‘Use of Consultants Working Group’ during 2009 and after that the Council reduced its use of consultants in the period between 2010/11 and 2012/13 to a low point of £1,202,000.

However, it was decided that a ‘Use of Consultants’ report would form part of the Annual Outturn report to Cabinet and since that change the trend has resumed its upwards trajectory with expenditure incurred in 2016/17 of £2,468,000.

I lodged a Freedom of Information to request a breakdown of £2,468m and this is attached.

Perhaps members of the Association may wish to comment on this?
